YouthBuildSL is a Non-Governmental Organisation, non-political, non-religious, non-profit making. It’s an organization, promoting skills development amongst the children, youth and other vulnerable groups in the communities. The organisation is currently operating in Western and Northern Sierra Leone, we are activily seeking partners and volunteers to establish YouthBuildSL across the whole country.
Empowering children, youth and vulnerable groups in communities will contribute significantly to the future economic development of Sierra Leone’s
economy; realising that most children, youth and disadvantaged groups in communities lacked the requisite skills, knowledge and resources to participate
actively in the social and economic development. Evidence suggests that there is lack of employable skills, high number of out of schools children and young people, empowerment of children youth and vulnerable groups is an important aspect in bringing about sustainable development.
It concerns us also that the youth are described as either a dynamic force for innovationand economic development or as a threat to the stability of the country. This dichotomy obscures the complexity of the age category known as “youth”, defined in Sierra Leone as the age group between 15-35 years old. This group represents 35 % of the total population. These millions of youths are transitioning to adulthood with limited opportunities for viable livelihoods. They grew up during the war that disrupted every aspect of their lives. Most were unable to attend school regularly, had to migrate in search of safety and experienced the traumatic loss of parents or other family members. As this young generation now begins to establish their own households, most have no job skills or business networks and a staggering 46 % are unemployed. Youth unemployment remains a major challenge in postconflict Sierra Leone and the Government has been faced with the mammoth task of creating employment for the large number of young people who are out of work.
Most young people lack the essential skills to compete for jobs in the work force, and as evidence in the current challenges young people continue to face in securing work in the mining industry such as London Mining and African Minerals. The youths that are supposed to be the bedrock to the development of the national economy are mostly illiterate, not recognized, unrepresented and voiceless, and are generally least cared for in the national development agendas.
It was therefore resolved that in order to bring these marginalized youths into the national economic mainstream, the founders of this organization solemnly agreed to form an organization to promote basic entrepreneurial skills for increased production, productivity and value addition for youth deveopment and employment.
